Vice President Sara Duterte isn’t keen on raising the salaries of public school teachers over concerns that it might trigger a “mass migration” of teachers from private schools.

At the budget briefing of the House appropriations committee Wednesday (September 14), Duterte said private schools are the “market standard” when it comes to determining the pay of teachers.

“If the government continues to give or increase the salaries of teachers in the government sector, this will put undue pressure on the private educational institutions, thus creating a mass migration of teachers from the private schools to public schools, which we see now,” explained Duterte, who is also the concurrent Education Secretary.

“We have private schools n nawawalan ng teachers dahil lumilipat sa DepEd. And this will force more closures of private schools dahil ang market standard ay dapat ang sweldo sa private schools,” she added.

An entry-level Teacher 1 at a public school has a salary grade of 11 and receives a monthly pay of P25,439 monthly.
