Velasco ally accuses Romualdez camp of floating coup in House

By Billy Begas

An ally of Speaker Lord Allan Jay Velasco on Wednesday accused the camp of House Majority Leader Ferdinand Martin Romualdez of floating the move to change the leadership of the House of Representatives.

Lakas-Christian Muslim Democrats (Lakas-CMD) denied the allegation branding it as “utterly preposterous.”

In a virtual interview, DIWA Rep. Aglipay, chair of the House Committee on Good Government and Public Accountability, admitted receiving a text message to unseat Velasco.

“Actually ang nakuha ko lang na text during the entire Monday was to unseat the Speaker, which I think galing din sa kanila. Ang concern lang naman nila si Majority Leader para hindi namin galawin papalabasin nila gagalawin nila si Speaker,” Aglipay said.

Aglipay believed that it would be impossible for Lakas-CMD to oust Velasco since they only have around 30 members in the House. He said Velasco has the backing of 200 congressmen.

“Tingin ko they are getting ahead of themselves sila nagpa-float ng idea na tatanggalin si Speaker para wala kaming gawin, eh wala naman kaming gagawin on the first place,” Aglipay added.

Aglipay said someone from Malacañang has told him that they do not want a leadership change in the House.

“Sa tingin ko ngayon naghihintay sila ng mas grabeng move. As of now hindi pa nagwa-warrant na magtanggal as of today,” he added.

Asked about the possible reason why Romualdez will be ousted, Aglipay said this could be because President Rodrigo Duterte is blaming Lakas-CMD why his daughter Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte Carpio settled to run for vice president.

Romualdez is the president of Lakas-CMD and the cousin of presidential aspirant former Senator Ferdinand Marcos Jr.

Meanwhile, Lakas-CMD has issued a statement answering Aglipay’s allegation.

“President Rodrigo Duterte did not make any categorical statement blaming Lakas-CMD for the decision of Mayor Sara to run as Vice President. We would like to refer Rep. Mike Aglipay to the interview of President last Sunday with regard Mayor Sara’s decision. Nowhere in his statement did the President blame Lakas-CMD or any member of the party for the Mayor’s decision,” the statement read.

Lakas-CMD also stressed that there is “absolutely no basis to Rep. Aglipay’s insinuations that rumors of a supposed coup to oust the Speaker and the Majority Leader may have come from “them” meaning Lakas.”

Romualdez focused on Sara’s VP bid, not House leadership change

“This is utterly preposterous. Once again, these rumors did not originate from us and we don’t have any intention of changing the leadership in the House of Representatives,” the statement further read.

Lakas-CMD also reiterated their “strong and unequivocal support” to Duterte and his senatorial bid and promised to continue working closely with Malacañang to push for the President’s legislative agenda in the remaining months of the 18th Congress.

“We should all stop these finger-pointing and destructive politics and concentrate on passing the 2022 budget and other significant measures that will help our country recover from the ill-effects of the COVID-19 pandemic,” Lakas-CMD added.

Lakas-CMD also urged those supporting Duterte to “take to heart” the appeal of its vice presidential candidate “(na) magkaisa po tayong lahat na mga sumusuporta sa administrasyong Duterte. Iisa lang naman ang ating mga pangarap — ang pagkakaroon ng mas matatag, mas mapayapa, mas maulad na bansa.”
