Senate President Pro Tempore Ralph Recto cited this famous Batangas saying in his speech endorsing the presidential candidacy of Manila Mayor Isko Moreno on Friday.
Recto explains why he chose Isko Moreno over Senate colleagues
He explained: “Ang ibig sabihin nun, kailangan may talino, may competence, courage, at dadagdagan ko, kailangan may puso para sa mahirap. Si Isko, na ilang buwan ko nang kasama, may competence, courage at tapang, at may empathy para sa pangkaraniwang mamamayan.”
“Kaya ang paki-usap ko sa ating mga kababayan, pag-isahin na natin si Mayor Isko para maging susunod na pangulo ng bansang Pilipinas,” Recto said.
He made the assurance at the joint One Batangas – IM Pilipinas convention held in Lipa City that was attended by all of the provinces district representatives, all provincial board members, 20 of the 34 municipal and city mayors, municipal and city councilors, as well as barangay chairs.
Recto said the people of Batangas chose Moreno for president because “he has the competence, courage and empathy needed to bring the country to its feet and uplift the lives of all Filipinos in this time of the pandemic.”
He said these were all evident in how he responded to the problems brought by the pandemic to the City of Manila.
“Nakita natin kung paano siya nagresponde sa problema ng pandemya,” Recto said, relating how he was amazed with Moreno’s accomplishments in the Philippine capital.
These included a vaccination drive that resulted in Manila having the biggest number of vaccinated persons, not just in Metro Manila, but in the entire country.
“Sa bilis ng kilos niya, nakapag-pagawa ng field hospital sa loob ng 52 days, ganun kabilis. Talo ang national government,” Recto said.
“Kung kaya sa Maynila, ang sabi ko kay Mayor Isko: gawin natin sa buong Pilipinas,” he said.
